As an Urban Greening intern, you'll support Greenpop's Urban Greening Programme (UGP) across our tree planting, indigenous/food garden, and community greening projects in South Africa — including our Living Landscapes sites.Your tasks will include assisting with planning, stakeholder engagement, implementation, facilitation, and monitoring & evaluation across these projects. You'll spend meaningful time in the field with an Urban Greening Project Manager, visiting sites locally in Cape Town, alongside admin and reporting work.This role is designed as a launchpad into project management within the environmental and nonprofit sector. You'll be exposed to the full spectrum of what project coordination and delivery looks like in practice, with the potential for the strongest performers positioned to grow into more senior project management responsibility at Greenpop over time.
This internship is intentionally structured as an entry point into our project management pipeline. Interns who demonstrate strong performance across coordination, admin, and delivery work are well-positioned for progression into Junior Project Manager and beyond, though this is not guaranteed and depends on performance, fit, and organisational need at the time.Core responsibilities:- Desktop research related to new project development- Project coordination support — assisting with stakeholder engagement, volunteer and partner logistics, and maintaining project calendars/scheduling across Garden Days, workshops, and implementation projects- Assisting with urban greening implementation: site visits, material collection, landscaping, facilitation of Garden Days and Workshops- General administrative support — data capture, filing, correspondence, and helping keep project documentation and reporting on track- Assisting with planning and hosting volunteer days at our Eco-Education Hub, including exposure to nursery and propagation tasks (maintenance, irrigation upkeep, stock control)- Data collection, management, and evaluation, with growing exposure to project management processes (planning support, procurement/implementation assistance) as you find your footing- In-field photo and video content capture at Garden Days, Workshops, and Ecohub activity, for use in reporting, comms, and social media- Report writing and social media content support
Insights into urban greening in a South African context- Practical field experience in urban greening / gardening- A thorough understanding of the planning, coordination, and evaluation of urban greening projects- Practical experience in monitoring & evaluation for a nonprofit organisation- Exposure across the full UGP delivery pipeline — coordination, admin, nursery operations, and field content — to help identify where you'd like to specialise- Possibility (not guaranteed) of progressing to a longer, paid internship after the initial 3 monthsRequirements — skills, interests, experience:- Available for at least 3 months, 30 hrs/week- Basic knowledge of ecological issues/concepts- Strong data management skills- Strong English language skills- Willingness to work in the field during nursery, garden installation, maintenance, and monitoring days- Willingness to travel nationally with your supervisor when required- Good social skills and ability to work both in a team and independently- Own laptop and internet access required
