Kathy Robins views art as a vital expression of our current political, social, and ecological landscapes. Recognising that technology has become integral to global power structures and environmental impact, Robins explores the paradox of an interconnected internet that frequently exposes us to only curated slices of reality. Drawing on Michael Shermer’s concept of ‘patternicity’, her work examines how the human brain constructs beliefs from limited information—a process now amplified by algorithms that filter and rank content to reinforce fixed perceptions.
Seeking to spark dialogue about these digital influences, Robins likens algorithms to the valves of a heart; just as valves regulate blood flow, algorithms control the flow of information, shaping both sight and sentiment. Her practice is deeply inspired by Bruno Latour’s ‘Critical Zones’, embracing his reimagination of humanity’s relationship with a fragile, limited band of Earth. By utilising mixed media, Robins explores the conditions that either embrace or restrict this essential complexity, using imagination and community to reveal what is unsettling, comforting, and possible within our world.
