Our work is a holistic, locally led approach to revitalising entire landscapes across Sub-Saharan Africa. We weave together sustainable development and ecological restoration to build a thriving, resilient future for both people and planet.
From forests and grasslands to rivers and oceans, the health and diversity of Earth’s ecosystems are the basis of human prosperity and well-being. Our focus on restoration is rooted in the four essential services these habitats provide:
Products people obtain (food, fresh water, wood, genetic resources)

Benefits from process regulation (climate, water purification, flood control, pollination)

Non-material benefits (recreational, spiritual, aesthetic, educational)

Fundamental, long-term processes (nutrient cycling, soil formation, habitat provision)

Land degradation, the decline in the productivity and health of land, is one of the most urgent environmental and social crises facing Sub-Saharan Africa. According to the UNCCD Data Dashboard, 263.15 million hectares (or 11.96%) of reported land in Africa is degraded. This decline manifests in forms like desertification and severe deforestation, and is intrinsically linked to global challenges, including poverty, drought vulnerability, and food insecurity.

Landscape restoration is the crucial, proven approach we use to halt and reverse this trend across the continent. Our work is intentionally aligned with, and contributes to, major international frameworks:

Contributing to targets by conserving and restoring biodiversity.

We don’t just plant trees; we restore whole ecosystems. Using the internationally recognised Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) framework and the principle of Bioregionalism, we ensure the right interventions are placed in the right locations to heal both people and the planet. Our approach is built on three pillars:

Restoring and protecting land based on its natural ecological boundaries. We focus on indigenous reforestation and alien vegetation management to build climate-resilient landscapes.

Working hand-in-hand with local partners who bring deep contextual knowledge, we ensure long-term, locally owned impact.

Integrating activities like agroforestry and beekeeping to ensure that restoration provides tangible economic benefits and food security for the people who steward the land.
Since 2010, Greenpop has been dedicated to restoring our planet and connecting people with nature.

Our flagship reforestation projects focused on restoring key temperate forests and their ecological balance in South Africa, Malawi, Zambia and Tanzania.

Helping smallholder tea growers adapt to climate change and manage natural resources sustainably in the Thyolo and Mulanje districts of Malawi.
Every hectare restored, every indigenous tree planted, and every partner we support is powered by people like you. Join the movement to heal landscapes and secure a thriving future for all.
