A data dilemma…

Did you know that for fifteen years, Greenpop has tracked every single tree it has ever planted in a spreadsheet? All 300,000 of them, across four African countries, since 2010. It is called the Tree Bank, and it is, in many ways, the meticulous, beating heart of our organisation. But it is also completely unsustainable. Right now, access is locked to just three people. One wrong move, and the system crashes.

Greenpop today is not the same organisation that started with a borrowed spade and a plan to plant a thousand trees in a month.

Today, we manage large urban green spaces in every major South African city. We’ve just exceeded the planting of 300,000 trees across four African countries, maintaining a survival rate of over 70%. We’ve launched an online learning platform to support grassroots environmental startups; we are conducting ecosystem baseline studies for a regenerative city in Sierra Leone; we are developing plans for an agroforestry centre in Nairobi; and we have just signed a global partnership to scale our Festival of Action model across four continents.

For Greenpop, the data that needs to be tracked has grown exponentially. Trying to manage a continental footprint on basic, isolated spreadsheets has created an operational ceiling. It is the single biggest barrier stopping us from accessing large-scale institutional funding, and it prevents our donors from getting the transparent, real-time impact data they deserve.

On a remarkable sunny May afternoon marked by generosity, belief, and collective action, we partnered with Boschendal and Everard Read Franschhoek to curate the first-ever Greenpop Gala. It was a definitive moment where fine art, immersive design, African adventure, and landscape restoration came together to support a strategic investment in our resilience as guardians of Southern Africa’s landscapes.

Together, the Greenpop community raised an astounding R1,488,460 to shatter that operational ceiling forever.

An immersive welcome…

Stepping into the historic Olive Press at Boschendal, the afternoon began with a profound reminder of why we gather.

Attendees were first guided through our Impact Exhibition, which showcased 16 of Greenpop’s favourite legacy projects from over the years through striking, large-scale documentary photography.

From there, guests moved on to viewing our exclusive Auction Lots. Attendees got to interact up close with the extraordinary collective generosity of our partners, including our Art for a Living Legacy collection featuring 10 magnificent contemporary artworks curated by Everard Read Franschhoek, 3 bespoke Seats of Stewardship, and 9 luxury travel experiences in our Journeys of Impact Collection.

During this arrival period, guests enjoyed crisp Boschendal bubbly alongside delicious, flame-grilled mushrooms sourced straight from the estate. The atmosphere was immediately electric with anticipation.

A vision and a feast

As guests took their seats for a spectacular, farm-to-table vegetarian feast, the room was filled with the powerful stories that define our mission. Greenpop co-founder Lauren Teasdale warmly opened the event as the Master of Ceremonies, setting an inclusive and inspiring tone for the afternoon ahead.

Following her welcome, co-founder Misha Teasdale took the stage to share a deeply moving reflection on our fifteen-year journey—reminding us all that while our data systems are growing up, our grassroots soul remains entirely unchanged. We were also privileged to hear from Simphiwe Nikani, CEO of our beneficiary partner Philippi Village, whose inspiring words vividly illustrated the real-world, human impact of our projects on the ground.

These powerful messages beautifully complemented a culinary experience that celebrated seasonal, sustainable excellence. Crafted by the Boschendal culinary team using fresh produce picked directly from the Werf food garden, the Heritage Harvest appetisers set a vibrant tone for the afternoon — featuring beautiful estate highlights like coastal garden hummus with a rich basil pesto, and crisp vegetable samosas paired with a unique, Pinotage-infused sweet chilli.

An electric auction

Next, the floor transitioned to our highly anticipated charity auction. Taking the stage was the incomparable Ariella Kuper — an award-winning, powerhouse auctioneer renowned for her unmatched charisma and razor-sharp wit.

Commanding the room with absolute brilliance, Ariella turned the auction into the ultimate peak experience of the Gala. Her magnetic energy and masterful pace kept the crowd utterly captivated, driving a spectacular flurry of competitive giving. Under her brilliant stewardship, history was made: a 100% success rate with all 22 highly curated lots sold out completely, raising a grand total of R1,434,000 on the auction floor alone. The bidding momentum grew so intense that she even successfully pulled off spontaneous doubles on two of our premier items on the spot.

A moment for music

This was never going to be a stuffy, corporate dinner. The afternoon shifted into a profound cultural celebration as the stage came alive. Having legendary South African voices Zolani Mahola and Greenpop co-founder and board member Jeremy Loops pour their incredible artistry and souls into the room completely transformed the energy, moving the attendees and setting a tone of deep connection, joy, and collective optimism.

A closing promise

Bringing the formal proceedings to a close, Greenpop’s Chief Operating Officer, Zoë Gauld-Angelucci, took the stage. Having contributed to the organisation's success through three-quarters of its existence since joining the team in 2014, Zoë stepped into her operational authority to map out exactly what this historic fundraising milestone will build.

"None of the money raised through this auction is going toward buying more spades, fynbos, or trees. We already know how to do that," she stated. Instead, these resources are strictly earmarked for long-term operational resilience. By investing in specialised technical talent, advanced GIS mapping software, and a centralised reporting platform, Greenpop will transition its data out of internal silos into a fully integrated, public-facing dashboard. This infrastructure will grant potential funders and the public live, verified environmental and social impact data at the click of a button, with the first phase guaranteed to be live by the next Gala.

A sweet finale and shared celebration

With the vision for the future clearly mapped out, the afternoon shifted into a relaxed, sweet finale. Guests were treated to an array of decadent seasonal desserts from the Boschendal culinary team, beautifully paired with a premium South African whisky toast courtesy of Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky.

As glasses were raised to a successful day, the room buzzed with a final wave of excitement for the raffle draw. Ticket sales from the raffle added an incredible R54,460 to the day's total — the perfect, high-spirited conclusion to an unforgettable afternoon of collective action.

A new sustainable standard

Our insistence on integrity extends into every detail of our work, because Greenpop's commitment to the planet doesn't stop when we step out of the field. It shows up in every single choice we make. To ensure our footprint at Boschendal was as intentional and considered as our restoration projects, the first-ever Greenpop Gala was explicitly designed to embody sustainable eventing excellence.

Every decision was guided by our Green Standard, a set of core principles that came to life across the afternoon through meticulous, eco-conscious execution:

A Values-Aligned Venue: We chose to partner with Boschendal because of their long-standing commitment to sustainability and rigorous environmental systems, allowing us to align with best-practice resource management from the outset.

Zero Waste to Landfill: Supported by the estate's comprehensive waste management, recyclables and glass entered closed-loop recycling streams, while food scraps and organic waste were composted on-site to be returned straight to the estate's agricultural soils.

Conscious, Hyper-Local Dining: The afternoon featured a fully vegetarian menu designed to carry a significantly lighter environmental footprint. The dishes celebrated seasonal ingredients, with much of the produce sourced directly from the Boschendal Werf food garden and local growers.

Circular Décor & Furniture: A significant portion of the event décor and furniture was rented, repurposed, borrowed, or sourced through existing networks, drastically reducing the need for new production and unnecessary consumption.

Ecosystem-First Elements: Fynbos and foliage were sustainably harvested directly from the Boschendal estate. Printed materials were created using recycled seed paper from Growing Paper, while wooden décor pieces were crafted from sustainably sourced invasive wood by Wild Restoration, giving new purpose to materials that support ecosystem clearance.

Responsible Sourcing: Wherever possible, we prioritised suppliers, partners, and service providers who demonstrate an active commitment to environmental responsibility, extending the Gala's economic impact to the green economy.

Balancing the Footprint: To address unavoidable event emissions, including guest travel, Greenpop gifted every attendee a bespoke Tree Ring linked to a real tree planted through our restoration projects.

With the GPS coordinates of the restoration site engraved on the back, these rings allowed guests to connect directly with the landscape they are supporting. Through this initiative, 200 trees were allocated to Gala guests, contributing to long-term ecosystem restoration and carbon sequestration.

A final thought

Who we are and how we work will always remain the same. Fifteen years ago, the head of CSI at Woolworths shook Greenpop co-founder Misha's hand, having just planted Greenpop’s 1,000th tree at a community planting day. He noted that he hadn't felt that deeply connected to his fellow South Africans in years, not from signing cheques in an office, but from getting his hands dirty alongside his colleagues. That moment pointed at something this country fundamentally needed: genuine connection, equitable green spaces, and the simple experience of building something together. It is still what Greenpop is all about.

Back then, we may not have had experience running a major environmental campaign, but we proved we had something that mattered more. We knew how to gather people, tell a story, and choose joy and optimism before all else. That wasn't accidental, and it has carried us for fifteen years since.

But a movement needs infrastructure to match its ambitions. Three hundred thousand trees and counting. A survival rate above 70%. A reach that now spans the continent. The borrowed spade got it started, but what comes next requires something sturdier. After all, a better world doesn't happen in isolation, or by magic. It is built by a community, like ours, of people who choose to show up, contribute what they can, and insist that our ecosystems are worth fighting for.
